History of MPP

Founded in 1973, Mouvman Peyizan Papay (MPP) is a grassroots movement that organizes the small farmers in order to improve their living conditions. It started  in Papaye, a small community  located 2.5 miles from the city of  Hinche, capital city of the Department Centre in Haïti.

From just the two groups in 1973, MPP rose to nine groups in 1975 to 39 in 1976 .  The average number of members per group is 12.  In 2008 MPP counts over 50,000 members including adult men, women, and youth. The youth and women have their own structure (Youth movement, Women’s movement) inside MPP.

In Haiti, MPP is member of MPNKP (National Peasant Movement of  Papaye Congress), PLANOPA (National Platform of Peasant Organizations) and also a member of the RENASSA (National Network for Security and Food Sovereignty).

On the international level, MPP is a member of following organizations:
--Via Campesina (Founding member)
--CLOC (Coordinadora Latino Americana de las Organizaciones del Campo) Founding member

--COMPA (Convergence of the Popular Movement of the Americas) Founding member
